PM Modi Highlights Expanding India-Africa Ties: Trade, Defense, and Development at Forefront

New Delhi, May 4, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spotlighted the rapidly growing partnership between India and Africa, calling it a relationship anchored in mutual respect, strategic cooperation, and shared aspirations.

Speaking at a high-level event focused on South-South cooperation, PM Modi listed key milestones in India-Africa relations that reflect the scale and depth of engagement across trade, security, and development.

Key highlights included:

India-Africa Maritime Cooperation: The launch of the first-ever India-Africa maritime exercise marks a major step forward in security cooperation, aimed at enhancing joint capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.

Surge in Trade: Bilateral India-Africa trade has crossed $100 billion, demonstrating strong economic momentum and growing market integration.

Diplomatic Expansion: India has established 17 new diplomatic missions across the African continent, reinforcing its long-term commitment to deeper diplomatic ties.

Financial Assistance: India has extended a $12 billion line of credit and offered $700 million in grants for developmental projects across sectors such as energy, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Skill Development: Several vocational training centers have been set up across Africa, building local capacity and empowering youth with practical skills.

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): India is sharing its tech expertise by rolling out DPI initiatives with five African countries, enabling better digital governance and financial inclusion.

Humanitarian Partner: PM Modi also underlined India’s role as a “first responder” during emergencies in Africa — from medical aid to disaster relief, reaffirming India’s commitment to stand by the continent in times of need.

“These initiatives reflect not just our goodwill but also our belief that Africa’s rise is essential for a balanced and inclusive global future,” said PM Modi.

The announcements underscore India’s strategic pivot to Africa, both as a development partner and a key player in the evolving global order.
